Crew Member Wanted
Pole Position is the competition to find a sixth man to take part in the Old Pulteney Row to the Pole Challenge. Jock and his crew will be heading off to the Arctic region in summer 2011 to attempt a world first – rowing to the Magnetic North Pole.
The competition winner will be chosen during two heats testing physical and mental fitness.
The deadline for entries was 1 November 2010.
Entrants should be available on the 20 November 2010 to take part in the second round qualifying heat. Please read the Terms and Conditions for further details.

Q: Will I have my expenses for attending the heats paid for?
A: No, all contestants should cover their own expenses to attend the heat.
Q: How fit do I have to be to enter?
A: The Pole Position winner needs to be physically fit with a good level of rowing ability – the heat will involve a 3 hour rowing challenge on a Concept II rowing machine.
Q: Is there an age restriction for entrants?
A: Entrants must be over 18 years of age.
Q: How much notice will successful entrants have before the heats begin?
A: Entrants will have at least two weeks’ notice before the heats take place.
Q: Will I need any special equipment to compete or enter the competition?
A: For the purposes of the Rowing Ergo test you will need to bring with you suitable gym gear, a water bottle and a tracksuit to change into, as well as a towel for a shower afterwards. All other equipment will be supplied.
Q: If I win how much time will the training take up?
A: It is likely that most of your weekends will be taken up in training for the expedition either on your own or where and when practical with the rest of the crew.
Q: How much time will I need to have free to take on the challenge if I win?
A: The expedition itself will take place in the period 25th July 2011 to 12th September 2011. The exact date of departure from the UK being determined by the ice conditions, but it will not be leaving the UK before the 25th July.
Q: Will there be any runners up prizes or opportunities in the competition?
A: If you aren’t successful in winning the competition, there will be an opportunity to take one of the reserve places on the team. Should one of the team not be able to take their place on the expedition, a reserve member could be in with a chance of taking this on.
Q: Do I need to have rowing experience to enter?
A: It is recommended that entrants have some level of rowing experience.
Q: If I can’t make it to a heat can I still enter elsewhere?
A: Unfortunately not, the heat is the only opportunity for entrants to meet the judges and undergo the physical assessment required for the Pole Position competition.
Q: Will I have to organise my own Visas?
A: There are currently no visas needed for Canada, but successful candidates from outside of the UK will be required to arrange their own requirements to attend training sessions in the UK in advance of the expedition.
